Define the terms properly
An exclusive lead means the inbound contact is delivered to one business only. A shared lead means the same contact is sold to multiple businesses, usually simultaneously, sometimes within seconds.
Some vendors describe leads as 'semi-exclusive' or 'limited share', which almost always means two to three contractors rather than five. It is still shared.
The speed trap
In a shared model, response time becomes the whole game. Studies of inbound lead handling consistently show that the first company to make contact wins a disproportionate share of the work. That forces contractors to keep someone on standby to dial instantly, which is an operational cost nobody accounts for when comparing lead prices.
With an exclusive inbound call, the homeowner is already on the phone with you. There is no race, and no cost to running one.
What it does to price
When three contractors quote the same homeowner within an hour, the conversation becomes a price comparison. Differentiating on quality is difficult when the customer has two other numbers written on the same notepad.
An exclusive call lets you sell on diagnosis, availability and trust. Contractors routinely report higher average tickets on exclusive inbound calls than on shared leads for identical work — not because they charge more arbitrarily, but because they are not being compressed into the bottom of a three-way bid.
Customer quality and attitude
A homeowner who chose you from search results begins the relationship differently than one who filled in a form and then received four calls. The second group is often annoyed before you speak to them, and a meaningful share of them never answer at all.
That annoyance is not the contractor's fault, but the contractor pays for it — in wasted dial time, in lower answer rates, and in a worse tone on the calls that do connect.
The exclusivity test to run on any vendor
Before paying for any lead source, ask these directly and hold them to the answers.
- How many businesses receive this lead or these calls?
- Is exclusivity contractual, and what happens if it is breached?
- Is exclusivity by trade, by ZIP code, by city, or by site?
- Can I verify volume independently — call tracking, recordings, logs?
- If I stop, does the same source immediately go to a direct competitor?
Why I only lease one business per site
Every site I rank goes to a single business in a single trade in a single market. It would be more profitable in the short term to sell the same calls twice, and it would destroy the thing that makes the model work.
A contractor leasing one of my sites should never wonder who else got the call. Nobody did.
